Navigating Divorce with Respect: A Healthier Path Forward

In honor of Divorce with Respect Week, observed from March 3 to 9, 2025, this week we are exploring seven strategies for Illinois’ families to navigate the difficult process of divorce in a much healthier and constructive manner.

I had the opportunity to attend an amazing conference this week to further develop my skills as a collaborative divorce attorney. As I sat in a fancy office downtown, right around the corner from my old building and stomping grounds – I couldn’t help but reminisce on what my old life as a litigator was like and how much different my day-to-day practice has changed, not only for myself, but for my clients. Trainings such as this and being a part of a group of like-minded professionals at Collaborative Divorce Illinois (CDI), have allowed me to improve my communication skills and give me the tools to better help my clients navigate an extremely difficult period of their lives.

As we all can imagine, divorce is challenging. Yet, this difficult process and time in your life can be approached in a manner that promotes healing, respect, and positive outcomes for all involved. In honor of Divorce with Respect Week, observed from March 3 to 9, 2025, we explore strategies to navigate divorce in a healthy and constructive way.

1. Prioritize Open and Respectful Communication

Effective communication is the foundation of a healthy and amicable divorce. Engaging in honest dialogues about expectations, concerns, and future arrangements can reduce misunderstandings and foster mutual respect. This approach not only alleviates tension but also lays the groundwork for amicable resolutions. Learn more about our approach here.

2. Consider Collaborative Divorce

Collaborative divorce is a legal process where both parties, along with their attorneys, commit to resolving disputes outside of court. This method emphasizes cooperation and shared decision-making, often leading to more satisfactory outcomes. It allows couples to maintain control over the decisions affecting their lives and can be less adversarial than traditional litigation. 3. Focus on the Well-being of Your Children

For couples with children, shielding them from conflict is paramount. Maintaining a united front and ensuring that children feel loved and supported can mitigate the emotional impact of divorce. In fact, according to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, the research shows that the death of a parent has a less harmful effect on kids than their parent’s divorce, but that those harmful effects can be minimized based on how a couple conducts themselves during a divorce.

Collaborative and out-of-court, alternative approaches to divorce can help parents navigate this difficult process in a much healthier and less harmful manner, by encouraging parents to communicate more effectively and work together to create stable and nurturing environments for their children.

4. Seek Professional Support

Engaging professionals such as mediators, therapists, and financial advisors can provide valuable guidance during the divorce process. These experts offer neutral perspectives and help in navigating complex emotional and financial landscapes, while facilitating healthy communication and informed decision-making. In a Collaborative Divorce, these roles are known as a child specialist and a financial neutral and they are invaluable members of a Collaborative Divorce Team.

5. Practice Self-Care

Divorce can be emotionally taxing. Prioritizing self-care through activities like exercise, mindfulness, and pursuing hobbies can enhance emotional well-being. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle supports resilience and aids in the transition to a new chapter in life. A Divorce Coach, or a Child Specialist, can exponentially help during this process to provide you with the tools and accountability to maintain and prioritize your self-care.

6. Build a Support Network

Connecting with supportive friends, family, or support groups can provide emotional sustenance during this period. Sharing experiences and receiving encouragement from others who have navigated the process of going through a divorce and come out on the other side in a healthy manner can be both comforting and empowering.

7. Stay Future-Focused

Concentrating on future goals rather than past grievances can promote a healthier divorce process. Setting clear intentions for post-divorce life and working collaboratively towards them can ease the transition and foster a sense of optimism. To put this mindset into application, we often ask our clients to focus on the future that they want for themselves 10 and 20 years from now and to frame their actions and decisions in the present based on the future that they envision for themselves.
